Photo rules and common mistakes
Get these right:
• Neutral expression, mouth closed, eyes open. No smiling with teeth.
• No glasses, hats, or headphones. Religious head coverings are fine if the face is fully visible.
• Even lighting, no shadows on the face or wall. Stand half a meter away from the wall.
• A plain, light background, and not a white shirt against a white wall.
• A recent photo. Most countries accept six months, but the UK requires one taken within the last month. The rule for your document is shown under Document above.
Avoid these:
• Beauty filters or edited photos; offices reject them. Use an unfiltered camera shot.
• Photographing an existing printed photo; it creates glare and patterns scanners flag.
• Hair covering the eyes or eyebrows.
• Zooming in while shooting. Stand further back and let this tool do the cropping.
Taking a baby's photo? Read this first
The rules are easier for babies than most parents think. For infants under one, the US accepts eyes that are not fully open and a slightly open mouth, and the UK allows lying down shots with no fixed expression. Older children must have eyes open.
Under 6 months: lay the baby on a plain white sheet near a window and shoot from directly above, camera parallel to the face. A crooked angle is fine; the straighten slider here fixes up to 45 degrees.
6 to 12 months: drape a white sheet over a car seat, sit the baby in it, and shoot from the front. This is the method the US State Department itself suggests.
Timing: right after a nap and a feed. Use burst mode and pick the best frame.
What still gets rejected: a pacifier, visible hands or fingers supporting the baby, hats or headbands, another person in the frame, and harsh shadows. A wrinkled sheet is the most common failure, so iron it and pull it taut before you shoot. For a US passport that is the only fix available: the State Department does not accept photos altered with software or AI, and this tool switches background replacement off automatically when a US document is selected. For countries that do allow editing, background replacement will even out the sheet for you.

Common questions

Will my passport photo definitely be accepted?
Our templates follow ICAO standards and the specifications published by each issuing authority, and the crop guides keep your head within the required size. Final acceptance always rests with the authority, so follow the photo checklist: neutral expression, even lighting, plain background, and a recent photo.
Is it really private?
Yes. Your photo is processed entirely in your browser and is never uploaded to any server. Close the tab and it is gone. There is nothing for us to store or delete.
What paper should I print on?
4 by 6 inch photo paper (101.6 by 152.4 mm) gives the best results and is the standard photo size worldwide. Metric 10 by 15 cm paper is very slightly smaller at 100 by 150 mm, so choose the 4 by 6 option here if your paper is inches and check the preview count if it is metric. A4 and US Letter also work. Always print at 100 percent scale, never fit to page.
Can I print at a photo kiosk or print shop?
Yes. Download the sheet as a picture file and take it to any kiosk or shop. Order a standard 4 by 6 inch print and cut along the guides. Metric 10 by 15 cm is a fraction smaller, so ask for 4 by 6 inches where that option exists.
What if the application website has a file size limit?
Enter the website's pixel and kilobyte limits in the digital file options and you get a compressed file that fits, plus a full quality copy for printing so the small one never gets printed by mistake.
How many photos fit on one sheet?
It depends on the photo and paper size. For example, six to eight 35 by 45 mm photos fit on a single 4 by 6 inch sheet, and around thirty fit on A4. The preview shows the exact count before you download.
